Back to Film - The start of it

It has been a long time since I have used photographic film for taking pictures. I have had many film cameras over the years. More recently, "point and shoot" for family snapshots. But I have always had a SLR "Single Lens Reflex" for photography. When I was in college and assigned as a sports photographer for the college newspaper, I used a Beseler Topcon. This was a 35mm camera from Japan made in the late 1960's and was completely manual. That meant I had to set the aperture, shutter speed, and focus.  I mostly shot Pan X B&W film together with a cheesy light meter and an additional 200 mm lens the photos came out nice.

In contrast to my DSLR, Digital Single Lens Reflex, It was as different as a 1920 crank wall telephone and an iPhone. The similarity is that you need to know the basic concept of the prior to master the latter.

In a bad twist of fate, my box of prints and negatives was mixed up with a apartment mate of mine when I graduated college. I never saw him or the photos again.

Next Blog on f stop.  Back to Film - Good riddance film, hello future.
